Prompted by overwhelming anecdotal evidence the first phase of the Music Skills educational study is underway; Studying the effect of the Music Skills Systemtm on student's overall ability to learn.

"Before learning to play the drums at Music Skills there was never anything that grabbed Tristan’s attention to the point where he could not sit and focus which caused a few problems at school. Since starting lessons at Music Skills, the most obvious difference learning to play the drums has is that now Tristan can sit and focus on tasks in school. This has now given him the confidence to know that when he focuses on something he can achieve it".
Carolyn Evans, Exeter.

*Tristan is one of the finalists of the young drummer of the year competition which took place in January 2010.

"My son learns to play both drums and guitar at Music Skills. What I have noticed most since he began sessions is that it has helped him to become so much more methodical in the way he approaches almost all aspects of his life, this is especially beneficial with his school work! As an aside to this, and maybe just as important, learning to play at Music Skills has helped him by boosting his confidence and in his school life it has helped build friendship networks."
EM, Somerset.

Under advice from Exeter University working with schools in the UK we are starting to collect preliminary data into what many are starting to call 'the music skills effect'.

The children get a free session and we get to collect data. It is absolutely free to schools.

Preliminary indicators

From the early indicators* in this pilot study we are finding that after their first Music Skills session children's perception of learning change as follows:

Learning is fun: 14.5% increase

Learning is easy: 33.40% increase

I have confidence in learning new things: 14.69% increase

These are the type of comments that we are getting back from the participants in this pilot study:

"I enjoyed the lesson, it was learning really fast"

"We learnt lots in little time"

"We just learnt loads of things in 1 hour, and I got on really well!"

"It was simpler than I thought. Thank you!"

"It was changed into a form which was easier to recall and remember than in class"

"You pick up new things without the tutor explaining"

"It was fun! It was better than learning with a normal tutor"

etc....

How can my school get involved?

*This data is only from a small amount of preliminary rounds of the study.  We are now looking to partner with more school so that we can collect enough raw data to begin to find out why the Music Skills Systemtm has the effect it does.
